Welcome to the About Section!

Here you can find some information about me, who has written the books, as well as about other people involved in the project.

The Author

My name is Niels Bernhardt and I was born in 1977, which makes me older than I would prefer. Well, I suppose I am not the only one suffering from not getting any younger. But I digress... Anyway, I grew up in what used to be East-Berlin and is now just Berlin, Germany.

I have fallen for the fantasy genre in my youth, which I attribute mostly to early fantasy computer games like Ultima VII, Eye of the Beholder, and the Might & Magic series, later to be augmented by Gothic, Elder Scrolls, and Dragon Age, only to name a few. I also dabbled in pen & paper RPGs but never had the luck of finding a long lasting group.

Concerning fantasy literature I have read and read probably far less than one would expect from someone who writes fantasy himself. Of course I have read "The Lord of the Rings", and not only once! So far I have enjoyed it four times and expect to consume it a few more times. Other than that I have read some of the Forgotten Realms stuff by Salvatore, Greenwood et al but liked it only enough to finish the books. Then there is Martin which I did not even know before "Game of Thrones" aired on television. As much as I like the television show, I find his books a bit too tedious to read. That is probably why I made it only half way into the second volume.

My professional career may be considered somewhat unlikely for a writer, but such is life. After finishing school I studied physics in Berlin and then received my PhD in mathematics from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Acutally the picture above was taken during my almost three years down there, so imagine me in truth a few years older and uglier. When I came back from New Zeland I continued my career in science in Hamburg. However, after two years I changed into private business and worked for about three years in intellectual property, first for a law firm in Munich and then for Rolls-Royce, finally back home in Berlin. I still live in Berlin but enjoy now the much more satisfying life of a freelance writer.
